I gave an overview presentation on my research program today as part of the Plant Science Departmental Seminar series at UC Davis. I thought I'd post it here for several reasons:
1. There might be someone out there who is just dying to know what I do - here you go!
2. I thought the software that I used (prezi.com) was pretty slick and made a nice presentation (gasp - not PowerPoint?!).
3. I spent a bunch of time learning about this (pretty easy to use) software and wanted to see how the "embed" function worked (HTML code is generated and makes it easy to embed the presentation in online vehicles like blogs, webpages, and social media tools).
4. A "program...

I recently ran across an article from Western Farm Press (written last November) that I thought was interesting and worth reposting here.
The article, which was entitled "Weed Control: Communication with Farmers Essential", provided a synopsis of a journal article on the subject. (the scientific publication was in the Journal "Weed Science" and was titled "Investigating the Human Dimension of Weed Management: New Tools of the Trade").
Both the web article and the journal publication discussed the human dimension of how weed management decisions are...

I was sent a short article from Science this week that discussed the impact of biotech crops on organic farms. The article is entitled "Can Biotech and Organic Farmers Get Along?" discusses issues with the science and politics surrounding GMO crops and gene flow to organic crops.
Science (online at www.sciencemag.org) is not open access so I can't post the pdf here. However, non-subscribers can read a summary and listen to a podcast interveiw with the author, Erik Stokstad, at this link (if you are at an institution that subscribes to Science, you can get the full article too). I think the podcast interview is interesting and a good presentation of...

A quick post today on a recent report of resistance to glufosinate, the active ingredient in Rely herbicide (also sold as Liberty, Ignite, Basta, etc in other markets).
Researchers in Malaysia reported a few years ago on a population of goosegrass resistant to glufosinate in vegetable and orchard systems (Lee L J & Ngim J (2000). A first report of glyphosate-resistant goosegrass (Eleusine indica (L) Gaertn) in Malaysia. Pest Management Science, 56, 336-339). For a number of years this was the only reported case of resistance to this herbicide.
At a meeting last month, I saw a presentation by Wilson Avila and Carol Mallory-Smith from Oregon...

I had the opportunity last week to attend the Weed Science Society of America (WSSA) annual meeting which was held in Portland OR this year. The meeting was really interesting as usual with many interesting oral and poster research presentations.
Two UCD weed scientists, Joe DiTomasso and Kassim Al-Khatib, were honored with the Society's Fellow Award - the highest level of recognition given by the group. More info on this award can be found here: http://www.wssa.net/WSSA/PressRoom/WSSA-2011-AwardWinners.htm
I've attached a research report presented by a UCD...
